Vocabulary is defined as the body of words used within a particular language. A person's vocabulary grows based on the words they hear and become familiar with. This can start at a very young age but a person's vocabulary is always growing. According to Susan Loraine, when a child reaches the age of 12 years old, they should have a vocabulary of roughly 50,000 words (Loraine, 2008).
Found on this site are 5 different vocabulary strategies that can be used for students of all ages, but can be focused on students in middle schools. These are not the only 5 strategies there are but are five that I have had the pleasure of both using and teaching in my classroom.
